Wrapped in Hope: Mercy High School

Hello and Happy Friday! Welcome to the second edition of our series: Wrapped in Hope, this edition featuring Omaha Mercy High School.

This year, Mercy has focused hard on figuring out ways to make their school more sustainable and eco-conscious.

One solution they had to this was to continue to push for education surrounding recycling. Their goal is to increase the consistency of recycling throughout the entire day. They’ve established bins for trash, plastic recyclables, and paper recyclables in each classroom and hallway to help ease the decision making process of knowing where to put an item when it’s time for it to be recycled.

Mercy’s goal this year, sustainability-wise, is for its students to apply what they’ve learned at school about recycling to their homes and eventually to the world beyond high school.

Mercy’s Sustainability Club hopes to implement a composting program at Mercy. They are working to make some progress on this next semester.

We, at The Leaflet, recognize the vital importance of grassroots education. This recognition was the primary reason as to why this newsletter was started. Teaching people about what is going on in the world around them and what they can do to help fosters a mindset of keeping the protection of our common home at the forefront of their decisions. This mindset carries with them throughout their entire lives, impacting potentially thousands of people an individual may meet and interact with in their lifetime.

Thank you to Omaha Mercy High School for all of the work you’ve done for the environment. Your work of education, not only academically, but in terms of the environment too, will create shockwaves for years to come.
